What we collect, and what we don't

The short version

• We do not sell your data.
• No ads, no tracking, no data brokers.
• Nothing reaches your school or your parents unless you send them a link.
• You can download or delete everything, any time, without asking us.
• You must be 13 or over to have an account.

What we collect

• Your account: name, email, a one-way hash of your password, and your date of birth, which we use to check your age.
• School context: grade, graduation year, school, city and state.
• Survey answers: what you picked, plus the scores and directions we work out from them.
• Your plan: the directions you keep, what you check off, and notes you add.
• Advisor conversations: stored so the next one makes sense, plus a count of how much you used the advisor each month, which is how your monthly limit is kept.
• Courses you have taken: name, level, year and grade.
• Activities: whatever you write in the optional box, plus what we found out about it.

Transcripts. If you upload one, we read it once and keep the course names, grades and credits. We do not store the file. Your name, date of birth, student ID and address are ignored.

We never ask for your address, phone number, government ID, test scores or payment details. Free-text boxes are optional, so do not type anything into them you would not want stored.

Who else sees it

The advisor sends your profile, results and plan to Anthropic, which runs the AI model that writes the reply. School research sends your school's name and location. The activity lookup sends what you wrote in the activities box.

Render runs the site and stores the database. That is the whole list. No advertising networks, no data brokers, no analytics following you around the internet.

Sharing with an advisor or a parent

Off unless you do it yourself. You create a link and send it to whoever you choose. They need their own account to open it, so you can see exactly who accepted, and you can cut their access at any time.

They see your grade, school, survey results, plan and courses. They do not see your advisor conversations or the private notes you wrote for the advisor.

How long we keep it

• Advisor conversations: deleted after 180 days without activity.
• Surveys you start but never finish: deleted after 90 days.
• Everything else: kept while your account exists, erased when you delete it.

If you are under 13

You cannot make an account. We ask for a date of birth at sign-up and stop there if you are too young. Nothing typed on that form is saved. Every pathway page is free to read without an account.

If a child under 13 has made an account, email sbidd@fybearing.com and we will delete it.

What you can do

• Download everything we hold, from your account page.
• Delete all of it, permanently and immediately, from the same page. We keep no copy.
• Correct it: edit your profile or retake the survey any time.
• Stop sharing: turn off anyone you gave access to.

Depending on where you live you may have further rights, including access, correction and deletion. Email sbidd@fybearing.com and we will handle it.

Security

Passwords are hashed, never stored as text. Traffic is encrypted. Sessions use signed, HTTP-only cookies. If something does go wrong, we will tell you and whichever authorities the law requires.

What Bearing is not

Bearing works alongside your school counselor. They hold your transcript, your credits and your school's graduation requirements. We do not.

Bearing is not a crisis service. If you are struggling, talk to a trusted adult. In the US you can call or text 988 at any time to reach the Suicide and Crisis Lifeline.
