The mistake people make here
Taking Statistics instead of Precalculus junior year. It's a common swap because stats reads as easier, and it removes Calculus from senior year. That's the single most common way students land in a CS program a semester behind in math.
Why this matters now
The decisions that matter most get made the earliest, with the least information.
Someone takes Statistics over Precalculus junior year because it sounds easier. Two years later they are applying to engineering programs that build the whole first year off calculus. Nobody told them those two facts were connected.
Same story with world languages, with chemistry, with art portfolios that take four years to build, with CTE pathways that need three. None of it feels like a big deal at the time.
